Breaking Barriers Building Bridges
Massively multiplayer online roleplaying games (MMOs) like World of Warcraft (WoW) are growing in popularity, combining the fun and challenge of video games with social networking. However, gamers who spend excessive time on WoW may find themselves in conflict with their on and offline lives. This article explores how MMO play can be a source of distress and anxiety. Cultural Context
The gaming context is a social one that intersects with fundamental societal discussions on the value of leisure and work. For example, the professionalization of different gaming activities such as streaming and competitive gaming blurs the lines between work and play.
Gaming is also a part of many respondents’ lives, often forming an important aspect of their daily routines and interactions with friends. In addition, gaming can serve as a means of personal and professional development.
However, some of the gaming participants in this study reported that negative discourses about gaming in the public discourse both in Finland and internationally influenced their gaming activities. Some of them feared that they would be stigmatized as gamers and therefore regulated their engagement in gaming communities. In addition, some of them experienced online hostility and discrimination while playing games, affecting their gaming behavior and influencing the way they interacted with other players. Other gamers, however, resisted such behaviors and confronted them (see Merilainen and Ruotsalainen, 2022).
Social Context
While some scholars have concerns that electronic mediums like online gaming and social media networking weaken or disrupt the community bonds that could be formed through face-to-face interaction, there are also many cases where these media serve as a platform for people to connect and form communities. For instance, the guilds in MMORPG games such as World of Warcraft offer a new ‘third place’ where like-minded individuals can come together and foster relationships/friendships that sometimes extend into the real world.
These connections are strengthened by shared experiences such as thrilling adventures and challenging quests, which often lead to emotional bonding. Additionally, gaming communities have been known to organize charitable events and fundraisers to support various causes. These initiatives demonstrate that gaming can be a powerful social force, breaking down barriers and building bridges between people around the globe. Furthermore, with the emergence of multilingual capabilities in AI-powered gaming apps, individuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds can connect and form long-distance friendships.
Technology Context
Online gaming is growing in popularity, melding the fun and challenge of video games with the social rewards of online communities. Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) such as World of Warcraft are especially popular, with millions of players in 2008 alone (Blizzard Entertainment 2008a). While gamers report enjoying the community and social aspects of gaming, they also complain of its negative effects: they feel that excessive time spent playing leads to depression and conflicts between their real-world relationships and the virtual ones in which they play (see e.g., Davis et al. 2002; McKenna and Bargh 2000).
Long-distance relationships are increasingly fueled by technology. AI-powered dating apps, for example, incorporate multilingual capabilities, allowing individuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds to communicate and build connections across geographic boundaries. These innovations allow couples to maintain real-time communication, experience virtual presence, and uncover true attraction regardless of physical distance. The potential for love and connection across borders is limitless.
Gender Context
A number of barriers impede women’s entry and advancement in the gaming world. These include lack of role models (e.g., in the “brogrammer” tech culture), hostile work environments, conscious and unconscious bias, and cultural stereotypes that discourage girls from pursuing STEM studies or careers.
